What's on the card
A horned creature with bat wings and an inverted pentagram on its forehead sits on a black pedestal, right hand raised and a downward-pointing torch in the left. A naked man and woman with tails are chained to the pedestal by the neck, the loops of the chains hanging loose.
The Devil upright
The Devil shows what holds you tighter than you'd like: a habit, a fear, a debt, a relationship with no room to breathe. Admitting it is unpleasant, but that's exactly how a choice appears. The chains on the card hang loose, and you can take them off yourself. If your evenings keep disappearing into a news feed, charge your phone in another room and see what fills the freed-up hour.
The Devil reversed
The reversed Devil says the grip is loosening: you can see what was holding you, and the strength to change it is coming back. Don't rush the result. Pick one dependence or concession and, for a week, swap it for something you genuinely enjoy.
The Devil in love and relationships
In love, the Devil points to strong attraction and to the places where passion mixes with control or jealousy. A couple should check that each of you still has a life of your own. If you're single, notice what kind of people you're drawn to again and again, and ask yourself why.
The Devil in career and money
At work, The Devil shows dependence on a salary, a boss or a familiar routine, even when they don't suit you. Money becomes the main measure of everything. Count how many hours a week go to things you dislike, and come up with one step that would lower that number.
The Devil: yes or no
No Not in this form: there's a lot of pressure, habit or need for approval here. Notice what's pulling you and don't agree today.
Reversed. Maybe You're starting to see what keeps you in this loop, and there is a way out. Step aside: drop one habitual concession.
The Devil as your card of the day
A habit pulls harder than usual today. Noticing it already loosens its grip. Pick one thing that eats time or money for nothing and skip it, at least for this evening.
Reversed. The grip of an old habit or someone's pressure is loosening. You can take a step toward freedom. Today, say no to one request you usually agree to on autopilot.
A question for the evening: What held me more tightly today than I'd like?
Descriptions follow the classic 1909 Waite–Smith deck. Card meanings help you think a situation through and don't replace advice from a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser.
