What's on the card
A man in a red cloak with a staff walks away at night from eight stacked cups toward rocky mountains. Above him hangs a moon with a face, and water lies below.
Eight of Cups upright
The Eight of Cups is about leaving what no longer fills you, even when everything looks fine from the outside. You leave behind what you've invested and go looking for something that matters more. The decision is quiet, with no slammed doors. If your job hasn't felt right for a while, start small: write down what you're looking for and check one opening or course in that direction.
Eight of Cups reversed
You want to leave but you're afraid, or leaving looks like a way to dodge a hard conversation. The decision isn't ripe yet. Ask yourself what will change in a month if you stay, and write the answer down.
Eight of Cups in love and relationships
In a couple the card points to a sense that something is missing and a wish to find it. If you're single, it means letting go of old dating patterns. Tell your partner, or yourself, what's missing before you decide anything.
Eight of Cups in career and money
A project or role no longer gives you a sense of purpose, and you feel it more each week. Plan any exit calmly. List what you value in your current job and what you'd leave it for, so the decision rests on facts.
Eight of Cups: yes or no
No Not in the old form: this no longer fills you up. Think about what you're really looking for and write down what to take with you.
Reversed. Maybe Stay or move on: still unclear. Give yourself two weeks and notice what makes things lighter and what makes them heavier.
Eight of Cups as your card of the day
Something has stopped bringing you joy, and it's time to walk away from it. Leaving opens the way to what matters more. Name one commitment that no longer gives you anything and decide how to close it.
Reversed. You want to leave but you're scared, or you're leaving something you still care about. Work out what exactly is wrong. Make two columns: what keeps you there and what pushes you away.
A question for the evening: What did I want to walk away from today, and why?
Descriptions follow the classic 1909 Waite–Smith deck. Card meanings help you think a situation through and don't replace advice from a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser.
