12 House Tarot Spread: Layout, Position Meanings and How to Read It

The 12 house tarot spread copies the horoscope wheel: twelve cards go down in a circle, and each one covers its own area of life, from money to friendship. It's also called the zodiac or horoscope tarot spread. It doesn't need a narrow question and shows the whole picture at once, so people often lay it on a birthday, at New Year or before a big change. Below are the layout, the meaning of each position and the order to read them in.

12 house tarot spread layout

The cards go down the same way the houses run in a birth chart. Card 1 sits on the left, at nine o'clock, and the rest follow counterclockwise: cards 2 and 3 move down, card 7 ends up on the right, card 10 at the top. A 13th card in the center is optional and sets the overall tone.

  1. Pick a time frame. The spread looks at a stretch of time: the year from your birthday, the next six months, a season. Write it down next to the date.
  2. Shuffle and lay the cards one by one, from the first house to the twelfth.
  3. Turn them over in order. Don't jump to the "important" houses: the point of this spread is seeing every area side by side.

How to read a zodiac tarot spread

Start by scanning the whole circle. Count the major arcana: the houses where they land are the main areas of the period. Then look at the suits. Lots of Wands points to projects and initiative, Cups to feelings, Swords to decisions and conversations, Pentacles to work and money.

Then read the houses in pairs. Opposite houses form axes, and the cards on one axis complete each other:

  • 1 and 7: me and the other person;
  • 2 and 8: my money and shared money;
  • 3 and 9: the near circle and far horizons;
  • 4 and 10: home and career;
  • 5 and 11: personal joys and shared plans;
  • 6 and 12: everyday tasks and rest.

Say the Eight of Pentacles lands in the tenth house and the Four of Wands in the fourth. Together the axis is about balance: work calls for steady effort, and home gives you something to lean on.

Finish with the center. The 13th card answers "what is this period about overall". Check the others against it: which houses agree with it, and which push back.

Hard cards are read the same way. The Tower in the second house points to a financial plan resting on an assumption worth checking early. Go over the budget for the coming month.

Pairing the spread with your birth chart

In a horoscope, every house has a sign on its cusp and sometimes planets inside. The spread becomes personal when you lay your free birth chart next to it. Say your tenth house is in Capricorn with Saturn in it, and the King of Pentacles lands there in the spread. Both point to patient, long-term work on your reputation.

Houses need a birth time: without it the chart is still drawn, but the houses and the Ascendant can't be worked out.

Each card in the spread also has its own sign or planet in the system behind the Waite deck. The full table is in tarot cards and zodiac signs.
